Job Summary:

This position is part of a team of professionals in the Natural Resources Department whose mission is the responsible stewardship of Tribal lands, waters, and resources.  Field layout of Tribal timber sales is this position's primary job duty.  Other Natural Resources tasks including but not limited to wildland fire incidents may be assigned as applicable.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs timber sale boundary traverse using Global Positioning System (GPS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and/or other instruments, hardware and software as directed.

  • Designs timber sale logging layout using field measurements and observations as well as GIS digital elevation models and images as directed. Produces logging design plans that minimize logging complexity and expense while providing sufficient protection to resource values such as soils, water quality and wildlife.

  • Using GIS and other software, produces timber sale maps to be used by Tribal natural resources professionals, contractors, partner governments, and/or the general public as directed.

  • Uses maps, compass, GPS and/or other tools to locate job sites and orient self in the field.

  • On the ground, marks timber sale cutting block boundaries, buffer zones, leave trees, right-of-way boundaries, and/or other areas and trees as applicable, using paint, tags and flagging as directed.

  • Performs forest road surveys as part of road survey crew, taking slope, bearing, and distance measurements in the field as directed.

  • Serves as member of Timber Resource Program, working in close coordination with supervisor, other Forestry staff, Timber Resource Program Manager, and other Natural Resources staff as applicable and as directed.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Education, Experience, and Licenses:

  • Requires high school diploma and one (1) year of college education in Forest Resources, Forest Products, Land Survey or closely related field.

  • Requires a minimum of one (1) year of directly related experience.

  • OR equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Must maintain a valid Oregon driver's license or obtain one upon hire, qualify for the Tribe's vehicle insurance, and provide proof of personal vehicle insurance.

Qualifications, Registrations, and Certifications:

  • Must have a good understanding of basic concepts of forest management/silviculture.

  • Must have good verbal communication and writing skills.

  • Must have the ability to read, understand and interpret technical documents.

  • Must be able to work with highly flexible multitask work priorities. Requires ability to balance work demands from many sources.

  • Ability to write technical reports and professional correspondence.

  • Must have a good understanding of field and workplace safety requirements, and be able to complete job tasks both safely and effectively.

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment requiring close coordination and respectful interpersonal communication, in the field and in the office.

  • Must be able to understand and interpret scientific data.

  • Requires basic math skills and understanding of statistical methods.

  • Ability to use computer programs including Word, Excel, Outlook and Access.

  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to Native American culture required. Native American employee preferred.

Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Continually requires the ability to express or receive detailed information or important instructions through oral communication.

  • Continually requires working with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm. Requires repetitive movement of wrists, hands and/or fingers. Frequently requires walking or moving about to accomplish tasks.

  • Requires standing and/or sitting for sustained periods of time, raising objects from a lower to a higher position and/or moving objects horizontally.

  • Frequently requires walking or moving about to accomplish tasks.  Frequently moving about on streams and in the woods requires balancing on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces.
  • Frequently requires ascending or descending steep terrain using feet and legs and/or hands and arms.  Such activity frequently requires reaching or extending arms for hand-holds to aid in ascent.
  • Field work frequently involves heavy work:  Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • The worker is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions.  The worker is frequently subject to varied terrain and extreme weather conditions for periods of more than one hour, which may include rain, snow, sleet, hail, wind, sun, fire, extreme heat or cold, extremely high or low humidity, or a combination of these conditions. 
  • The worker is frequently subject to noise, sufficient to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level. 
  • The worker is frequently subject to fumes, odors, dust, mists, and chemicals.  The worker is frequently subject to exposure to animals, such as snakes and insects.
  • Supports a safe work environment by performing all duties in accordance with Tribal safety policies and procedures, and Emergency Management Plan. 
  • This position requires wildland firefighter training; ability to obtain and maintain a "red card" with at least a Firefighter Type 2 qualification is required.  Must be able to pass the Pack Test.
  • Due to the nature of the interactions with other employees and the public we serve, employees may be required to provide documentation of, or receive, certain health vaccinations.

  • May be called upon to serve as a Disaster Reservist during Emergencies, or when the Tribal Emergency Operations Center is opened.

  • Local travel is frequently required. Travel outside of the state is infrequently required.
