Job Summary:

Performs a variety of technical and administrative tasks in the dental clinic.  Provides routine and advanced prophylactic and therapeutic dental care to dental patients.  Obtains and provides information regarding dental patients.  Presents reports and renders clinical oral hygiene services.  Ensures that the provision of healthcare services takes place in a professional non-biased environment and is accomplished efficiently.

Essential Functions:

  • Takes x-rays, records periodontal findings and tissue assessment to determine type of prophylaxis patient will require. Examines patient's teeth and surrounding tissues to determine extent of abnormal condition requiring treatment.
  • Records the history of each patient to determine if systemic conditions are present which may require standard treatment.
  • Performs oral prophylaxis and provides therapeutic care such as scaling and root planning.  Applies preventive medicaments such as fluoride, silver diamine fluoride and iodine. Places sealants in adults and children as a preventive measure in the grooves of teeth. Prescribes fluoride supplements when necessary. Delivers antibiotic agents in periodontal pockets.  Administers local anesthesia.  Provides oral hygiene instructions based on patients dental status.
  • Identifies and pursues methods of professional growth and career development in identified needs areas for self and staff.
  • Serves as the broken appointment coordinator.
  • Manages patient recall system.
  • Is authorized to serve both eligible and non-eligible beneficiaries in an outreach capacity both on and off site.
  • May involve transporting native and/or non-native patients of the GRHWC in company vehicle.
  • Performs a variety of other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Education, Experience, and Licenses:

  • Requires a Bachelor's degree as accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association.
  • Requires five (5) years of clinical experience; post-training is required.
  • OR equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Must maintain a valid Oregon driver's license or obtain one upon hire, qualify for the Tribe's vehicle insurance, and provide proof of personal vehicle insurance.

Qualifications, Registrations, and Certifications:

  • Knowledge of dental clinic operations, procedures and equipment and basic first aid.
  • Must communicate effectively; establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, pharmacies, laboratories, and other employees.
  • Must possess and maintain State of Oregon license for dental hygiene.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to Native American culture required.

Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Continually requires the ability to express or receive detailed information or important instructions through oral communication.
  • Continually requires working with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm. Requires repetitive movement of wrists, hands and/or fingers.  Often requires walking or moving about to accomplish tasks.
  • Continually requires repetitive movement of the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
  • Continually requires twisting body and reaching.
  • Continually requires gripping with hands and fingers and finger dexterity.
  • Requires standing and/or sitting for sustained periods of time, raising objects from a lower to a higher position and/or moving objects horizontally.
  • Occasionally requires lifting of up to 40 pounds.
  • Due to the nature of the interactions with other employees and the public we serve, employees may be required to provide documentation of, or receive, certain health vaccinations.
  • This position is frequently subject to inside environmental conditions which provide protection from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes, and is occasionally subject to outside environmental conditions.
  • Frequently exposed to detergents, acids-caustics, and solvents.  Frequently wears safety glasses gloves, mask and lab coat.  Frequently works alone with rotating machinery.
  • May be called upon to serve as a Disaster Reservist during Emergencies, or when the Tribal Emergency Operations Center is opened.
  • Local travel is occasionally required. Travel outside of the state is infrequently required.
