Job Summary:

Create a successful environment that will promote the academic, social and individual development of students and their families.  Provides tutorial services to meet the academic needs of Native American students in grades K-5 in the community and/or Tribal Member students wherever they are located.   This position will primarily design and implement academic support services for students requesting such services from the Youth Education Program.  Coaches may be assigned a particular subject matter or grade level.   

Essential Functions:

  • Coordinates and schedules academic coaching sessions with native students in grades K-5 on an individual, small group, and classroom basis as requested or needed.
  • Utilizes cultural based lesson plans when available, incorporate the use of software assessment programs and utilizes the Youth Education Program computers in planned learning sessions.
  • Attends Multi-disciplinary Team (M.D.T) and Individual Education Plan (I.E.P. & 504) meetings and Care Team meetings as notified/requested by students, parents and teachers and consults with the Department's Family Services Coordinator regarding needs and services.
  • Establishes and maintains student files to monitor and track academic progress and attendance, and works with families, school staff toward improvements as needed.
  • Incorporates known teaching strategies and technical skills when designing and implementing academic supports.
  • Maintains a high standard of professionalism in carrying out academic support services. classroom duties.
  • Assesses student academic needs and, develops instructional programs, and strategies to improve student success.
  • Provides an environment of acceptance that supports and respects gender, culture, language, ethnicity, family composition and special needs of program students.
  • Sets clear and consistent expectations for students' academic and social behavior.
  • Responsible for working with students, families and school officials to ensure Individual Education Plans (IEP's) are followed as needed and maintained according to state and federal law. Monitors the implementation plans to ensure fulfillment of IEP goals.
  • Gathers information and delivers regular updates on student needs, progress, and obstacles to success to YED Team.
  • Provides written progress and final reports to parents and supervisor.
  • Establishes and maintains a process to enhance parent involvement by providing an atmosphere that promotes and reinforces parental involvement in students' academics.
  • Conducts conferences with parents and staff regarding each students' educational status and progress.
  • Works with YED team to coordinates and facilitates academic activities at the Youth Education Center.
  • Participates in student staffing sessions with district personnel as needed.
  • Assists with coordination of services between Title VII Indian Education Program and Tribal Youth Education Program.
  • Plans and participates in educational field trips and assists with the planning of cultural based spring break and summer trips.
  • Assists in promoting, recruiting and instructing summer enrichment courses and workshops.
  • Ensures that all participants at Youth Education Program Center follow standard rules of conduct and maintain policy requirements.
  • Complies with required standards and policy.
  • Ensures compliance with the Reporting standards for Child Abuse and Neglect. Follows the standard process to report cases of suspected child abuse.
  • Provides resources information as needed, including mental health, adult education, social services, food bank etc.
  • Provides support in other Youth Education related areas as needed.
  • Promotes and recruits for programs offer by CTGR such as the American Museum of Natural History ~ CTGR Internship, Native Youth Leadership, Summer Enrichment, Credit Recovery, School Supply Distribution, etc.
  • Collaborates with Wellness Prevention, Culture, Recreation or other CTGR department's, and programs/agencies in developing and implementing prevention activities.
  • Assists Youth Education in planning, recruiting and implementing activities as needed; this includes no-school days, spring break and summer.
  • Assists in development of Youth Education Program policy and procedure handbooks and ensures maintenance of established rules.
  • Provides student transportation as necessary to and from academic sessions and off campus trips and other activities.
  • Performs a variety of other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Education, Experience, and Licenses:

  • Requires a Bachelor's Degree and valid teacher's license as recognized by the Oregon Department of Education. Preference given to certification in grades K-5.  Master's Degree Preferred.
  • Requires demonstrated college level knowledge of required subject areas, including math, language arts, social studies, science or closely related field. High degree of academic excellence preferred.
  • OR equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Must maintain a valid Oregon driver's license or obtain one upon hire, qualify for the Tribe's vehicle insurance, and provide proof of personal vehicle insurance.

Qualifications, Registrations, and Certifications:

  • Familiarity with state standards and curriculum frameworks for Elementary K-5 levels.
  • Knowledge and experience with differentiated instruction.
  • Ability to manage and supervise students and their work.
  • Understanding of human growth and development patterns, learning theory and brain research preferably within native populations.
  • First Aid/CPR certification required or must obtain within 60 days of hire.
  • Must have good communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and use of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Must have the ability to relate well with children at various age levels as well as parents, teachers and administrators.
  • Requires knowledge of Individualize Education Plan (I.E.P. & 504) process.
  • Prefer knowledge of Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde culture and tradition.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to Native American culture required.

Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Continually requires the ability to express or receive detailed information or important instructions through oral communication.
  • Continually requires working with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm. Requires repetitive movement of wrists, hands and/or fingers.  Often requires walking or moving about to accomplish tasks.
  • Requires standing and/or sitting for sustained periods of time, raising objects from a lower to a higher position and/or moving objects horizontally.
  • Occasionally requires lifting of up to 40 pounds.
  • Due to the nature of the interactions with other employees and the public we serve, employees may be required to provide documentation of, or receive, certain health vaccinations.
  • This position is frequently subject to inside environmental conditions which provide protection from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes, and is occasionally subject to outside environmental conditions.
  • May be called upon to serve as a Disaster Reservist during Emergencies, or when the Tribal Emergency Operations Center is opened.
  • Local travel is occasionally required. Travel outside of the state is infrequently required.
