Job Summary:

Create a successful environment that will promote the academic, social and individual development of students and their families.  Provides academic guidance referral services to meet the academic needs of the Tribal member students at the local School Districts of Willamina and Sheridan. This position's primary design is to work with student, parent(s)/guardian(s), teachers, leadership and other departments to support the student for academic success. Ensures effective tutoring services are being conducted.

Essential Functions:

  • Establishes connections and relationships with assigned students by making contact with each student, and their parent(s)/guardian(s).
  • Develops and maintains an academic advising file for each assigned student. The file shall contain up-to-date contact information, attendance records, grades, test scores, academic support plans, IEPs and 504s as applicable, and current contact log.     
  • Facilitates academic coaching requests for students to schedule academic support sessions with on an individual, small group and classroom basis as requested or needed.
  • Leads team member staffing meetings on a regular basis to ensure effective support for students and families.
  • Works in a team with Youth Education staff, local school leadership, students and students' parent(s)/guardian(s) and other internal and external department supports as needed to meet the needs of the Native student for academic success.
  • Meets weekly with students, monitors student grades and confirms student is staying on track with engagement and online learning.
  • Weekly monitors students to ensure they are at grade level and on track to graduate.
  • Works with CTGR Higher Education Department with college/career prep, college, trade school, workforce or other career development in preparation for student's next steps after High School.
  • Attends Multi-disciplinary Team (M.D.T) and Individual Education Plan (I.E.P. & 504) meetings and Care Team meetings as notified/requested by students, parent(s)/guardian(s), and teachers.
  • Coordinates and collaborates with the Willamina and Sheridan School Districts in the provision of extracurricular academic and social development services held in the District facilities.
  • Participates in student staffing sessions with district personnel as directed.
  • Assists with the coordination of services between Title VII Indian Education Program and Tribal Youth Education Program.
  • Ensures that all participants at Youth Education Program Center follow standard rules of conduct and maintain policy requirements.
  • Complies with required standards and policy.
  • Ensures compliance with the Reporting standards for Child Abuse and Neglect. Follows the standard process to report cases of suspected child abuse.
  • Collaborates with other staff regarding student's IEP/504 plans and other concerns with barriers in academic success.
  • Provides resources and information as needed, including mental health, adult education, social services, food bank etc.
  • Ensures compliance with the Oregon Department of Education policy relating to paraprofessionals working in the Public School systems.
  • Ensures compliance with the Local School Districts Policy and Procedure Manuals.
  • Provides support in other Youth Education related areas as needed.
  • Promotes and recruits for programs offered by CTGR such as the American Museum of Natural History ~ CTGR Internship, Native Youth Leadership, Summer Enrichment, Credit Recovery, School Supply Distribution, etc.
  • Collaborates with Wellness Prevention, Culture, Recreation or other CTGR departments, and programs/agencies in developing and implementing prevention activities.
  • Provides student transportation as necessary to and from academic sessions and off-campus trips and other activities.
  • Assists in maintaining a clean facility.
  • Performs a variety of other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Supervisory:

  • Ensures the hiring, training, promoting, assigning, disciplining and discharging of employees are in accordance with Tribal Law, including without limitation, the Tribal Employment Rights Ordinance (TERO).
  • Assures staff adherence to all policies and procedures, work, safety and administrative rule, Tribal Law and State Regulations.
  • Serves as a mentor, as requested, for Tribal career development

Education, Experience, and Licenses:

  • Requires a Bachelor's Degree, preferably in an education-related field.
  • Requires a minimum of two (2) years of directly related work experience working with students and educational institutions. 
  • Requires a minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience.
  • OR equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Driving Requirements:

  • Must maintain a valid Oregon driver's license or obtain one upon hire, qualify for the Tribe's vehicle insurance, and provide proof of personal vehicle insurance.

Qualifications, Registrations, and Certifications:

  • First Aid/CPR certification required or must obtain within 60 days of hire.
  • Must have good communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and use of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Must have the ability to relate well with children at various age levels.
  • Ability to obtain knowledge of school district policy and procedures required.
  • Requires knowledge of Individualize Education Plan (I.E.P. & 504) process.
  • Requires above-average communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Requires the ability to relate at a professional level with parents, teachers and administrators.
  • Requires the ability to relate well with youth of various ages and intellects.
  • Prefer knowledge of Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde culture and tradition.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to Native American culture is required.

Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Continually requires the ability to express or receive detailed information or important instructions through oral communication.
  • Continually requires working with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm. Requires repetitive movement of wrists, hands and/or fingers.  Often requires walking or moving about to accomplish tasks.
  • Requires standing and/or sitting for sustained periods of time, raising objects from a lower to a higher position and/or moving objects horizontally.
  • Occasionally requires lifting of up to 40 pounds.
  • Due to the nature of the interactions with other employees and the public we serve, employees may be required to provide documentation of, or receive, certain health vaccinations.
  • This position is frequently subject to inside environmental conditions which provide protection from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes, and is occasionally subject to outside environmental conditions.
