Job Summary:

The Senior Auditor plans, conducts and oversees internal control, compliance and operational audits, and participates in consulting and risk management activities following standards promulgated by the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA). Audit Services provides objective, systematic, and professional evaluations of government and casino operations and contributes to the improvement of risk management, control, and governance systems.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs annual risk assessment and audit planning, gathers and documents information about the organization, business processes, products, services, initiatives, changes, and risks as directed.
  • Develops individual audit work programs based upon risks identified.
  • Conducts complex operational, internal control and compliance audit projects in accordance with established standards.
  • Coordinates internal audit projects within the department
  • Performs audit procedures, including identifying and defining issues and recommendations, developing criteria, reviewing and analyzing relevant information, evaluating evidence, documenting business processes and procedures and completing audit documentation.
  • Reviews and conducts analyses of business processes.
  • Collects, analyzes and interprets data to determine efficiency and effectiveness of operations.
  • Oversees less-experienced auditors on projects and performs initial review of their workpapers.
  • Plans and performs consulting and advisory services for management.
  • Communicates audit results via written reports and/or oral presentations to management
  • Conducts follow-up to monitor disposition of audit results communicated to management
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of all information encountered while performing audit work.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with management and staff.
  • Works in a professional and courteous manner, as a representative of the Tribe, with all those with whom coming in contact to include Tribal Council, the SMGI Board of Directors, management and employees of all Tribal entities, federal and state agencies, vendors and contractors.
  • Maintains professional ethical standards.
  • Provides assistance with special projects and/or confidential investigations as assigned.
  • Plans and performs services with regard to the department's role for evaluating the organization's governance, risk management and control processes.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Provides ongoing training, coaching, and supervision to staff.
  • Reviews audit workpapers and provides timely constructive feedback to staff to guide them in making needed changes and enhance their understanding of proper workpaper techniques.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Tribal Law, including without limitation, the Tribal Employment Rights Ordinance (TERO).

Education, Experience, and Licenses:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or a Business/Finance related field and four (4) years internal audit experience.
  • OR equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Previous Tribal government and/or gaming industry experience is preferred.
  • Designation as a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA); Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is desired.
  • High security gaming license issued by the Grand Ronde Gaming Commission, or ability to obtain one upon hiring.

Driving Requirements

  • This position may require driving.

Qualifications, Registrations, and Certifications:

  • Working knowledge of accounting and auditing standards and practices.
  • Working knowledge of financial reporting controls required.
  • Strong understanding of audit objectives related to initiating, processing, and recording transactions required.
  • Knowledge of federal funding and grant compliance desired.
  • Experience conducting various types of audits and confidential investigations required.
  • Demonstrated experience applying internal audit standards, procedures and techniques required.
  • Ability to work remotely during the work week
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Proven experience in oral and written communications, with special emphasis on interviewing and business report writing skills.
  • Excellence in cultivating positive interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to draw conclusions supported by strong analytical and problem solving abilities and professional audit judgment.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise audit documentation and reporting.
  • Understanding of Risk and Control Assessment Techniques desired.
  • Experience working with Data Collection and Analysis Tools and Techniques preferred.
  • Familiarity with the gaming industry, related regulations and Minimum Internal Control Standards desired.
  • Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Professional Suite (i.e. Outlook, Word, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint).
  • Experience with Tribal governments preferred.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to Native American culture is required.

Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Requires standing and/or sitting for sustained periods of time, raising objects from a lower to a higher position and/or moving objects horizontally.
  • Continually requires the ability to express or receive detailed information or important instructions through oral communication.
  • Continually requires working with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm. Requires repetitive movement of wrists, hands and/or fingers. Often requires walking or moving about to accomplish tasks.
  • Occasionally requires lifting of up to 40 pounds.
  • Due to the nature of the interactions with other employees and the public we serve, employees may be required to provide documentation of, or receive, certain health vaccinations.
  • This position is frequently subject to inside environmental conditions which provide protection from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes, and is occasionally subject to outside environmental conditions.
  • Supports a safe work environment by performing all duties in accordance with Tribal and casino safety policies and procedures, and Emergency Management Plan. 
  • May be called upon to serve as a Disaster Reservist during emergencies.
  • Occasionally works ten hours or longer a day, nights and weekends.
  • Local travel is occasionally required. Travel outside of the state is infrequently required.
