Job Summary:

Contributes to the Division's responsibility to protect and preserve the Tribe's grounds, Tribal Cemetery and landscaping in a manner which instills pride by providing a safe and professional environment in which staff and Tribal members conduct Tribal business. Performs groundskeeping, landscaping, and maintenance duties on all Tribal grounds, cemeteries, properties, parking lots, and roads.

Essential Functions:

  • Assists and oversees cultural hand-dug graves, works with contractors for machine-dug burials, and placement of burial markers.
  • Assists in the performance of basic maintenance of the facilities and grounds.
  • Cuts lawns, trims edges around walks, flowerbeds, and walls, including unimproved areas. Must be able to operate mowers, weedeaters, edgers, blowers, rototillers, blade, bucket, utility vehicle, lot vacuum, trailers and additional equipment pertaining to groundskeeping.
  • Prunes shrubs and trees to shape and improve growth or remove damaged leaves, branches, or twigs. Remove dead heads from plants to encourage blooming and cleans plants as needed.
  • Spray lawn, shrubs, and trees with fertilizer, herbicides, and insecticides. Rakes, and bags or burns leaves, grass and debris.
  • Cleans grounds and parking lots, and removes litter per daily schedule to the specified level of detail. Keep all outdoor trash containers empty.
  • Shovel snow from walks and driveways and apply approved deicing compounds on public passageways to prevent ice buildup and enforce safety in inclement weather.
  • Plants grass, flowers, trees, and shrubs, and maintain them on a watering schedule, which utilizes hose and irrigation methods. Lay irrigation pipe and sprinklers on Pow Wow ground and fields, and maintain irrigation pump.
  • Assists as needed with light plumbing and electrical problems or refers problems to supervisor.
  • Assists in various building preventive maintenance, repair, and construction tasks on all applicable equipment, i.e., HVAC systems, filters, smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, plumbing, electrical, painting, carpeting, etc. Repairs fences, gates, walls, irrigation structures and walks. Paints fences and out buildings. Reports needed repairs and safety concerns to supervisor.
  • Cleans out drainage ditches and culverts often full of water. Performs water diversion projects during the rainy season.
  • Sharpens tools such as weed cutters, lawn mower blades, edging, tools and shears.
  • Cooperates with other departments while performing groundskeeping duties.
  • Completes assigned tasks on a daily basis, as well as other duties as assigned. Hours are determined by 24-hour schedule and subject to seasonal changes.
  • Demonstrates respect towards others, especially during times of bereavement and burial, in accordance with Tribal Culture.
  • Ability to work under the direction of others in special projects and ongoing maintenance or assistance with grounds cleaning.
  • Performs a variety of other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Education, Experience, and Licenses:

  • Requires a high school diploma or general education degree (GED). Vocational training in a related field is preferred.
  • Requires one year of related experience and/or training.
  • OR equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Driving Requirements:

  • Must maintain a valid Oregon driver's license or obtain one upon hire, qualify for the Tribe's vehicle insurance, and provide proof of personal vehicle insurance.

Qualifications, Registrations, and Certifications:

  • Requires the ability to operate heavy equipment, machinery, and power tools safely.
  • Must have the ability to read and interpret documents in English such as safety rules facility maps, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Must have knowledge and understanding of basic mathematic principles involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with the ability to interpret charts and graphs. Must have the ability to work under the direction of others in special projects and ongoing maintenance or assistance with grounds cleaning.
  • Must have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Must have an understanding of and respect for Grand Ronde Tribe's culture, history and family lineages.
  • Weekend work is often required.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to Native American culture is required.

Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Continually requires the ability to express or receive detailed information or important instructions through oral communication.
  • Continually requires working with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm. Requires repetitive movement of wrists, hands and/or fingers.  Often requires walking or moving about to accomplish tasks.
  • Requires standing and/or sitting for sustained periods of time, raising objects from a lower to a higher position and/or moving objects horizontally.
  • Often requires walking, climbing or moving about to accomplish tasks.
  • Often requires gripping tools and operating tools and light machinery.
  • Often requires lifting of up to 50 pounds, occasionally more.
  • Occasionally works ten hours or longer a day, nights and weekends.
  • Due to the nature of the interactions with other employees and the public we serve, employees may be required to provide documentation of, or receive, certain health vaccinations.
  • The worker is frequently subject to inside and outside environmental conditions which may or may not provide protection from weather conditions.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, and vibration.  The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme heat, and risk of electrical shock. 
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
  • May be called upon to serve as a Disaster Reservist during emergencies.
  • Local travel is occasionally required. Travel outside of the state is infrequently required.
